Nathaniel Sevigny—June 2022 Athlete of the Month

1.Tell us about yourself, your family, your occupation, hobbies/interests.
​ I grew up in Grand Forks, ND, the first of eleven children. Grew up playing intramural sports, playing in the school bands, singing in the choir, acting, and learning the technical side of the theater. I came to St. Mary's in Fall of 2001 for my Junior year in high school (met my future wife at Thanksgiving that year, not that we knew it at that time). I continued on to SMC for my two-year Associate of Arts degree. I started on an engineering degree at K-State only to realize that it wasn’t worth the loans plus I couldn’t work fulltime, sleep, eat, and go to college without killing myself. So, I started my electrical career. Been there since. Still ended up with the desk job I really didn’t want, but oh well.

Now I am blessed with 9 children and my Beautiful Loving Wife.


2. When do you start CrossFitting? Why did you start? Why do you continue now?
I started CrossFitting a little over a year ago. I was coerced into joining by my wife so she could have an excuse to join herself. Okay, that was only part of the reason. I joined because I could see my physical health slowly but surely draining like a car battery does. After finally being broken enough to realize I wasn’t doing this on my own, I pushed aside my preconceived ideas about CrossFit, got a hold of Joe, and went to a no-sweat intro.

Continuing has been the easy part…and it has nothing to do with the competitive spirit.
Okay, that is probably one of the main reasons.


3. Do you remember your first WOD? What were your thoughts after your first WOD?
​ Not sure how I could forget my first class off of on-ramp. After looking it back up I do remember asking myself why I got myself into this as I lay on the floor nauseous. It wouldn’t have had anything to do with the DBL KB DL & Thrusters in the first WOD followed very shortly afterwards with the Burpees, KBS, & Sit-ups in the second WOD. WHOA!



4. What do you enjoy most about CrossFit?
​ By far the favorite part of CrossFit is the Camaraderie of the box. Everyone always helps encourages everyone else to push it through the end.


5. What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
​ Being able to go Rx on WODs with pull-ups and lately being able to do Girl Trouble, and Operation Red Wing without capping out. Hey, finishing at the timer is still an accomplishment.


6. What is your favorite movement or lift? What is your least favorite?
Not sure I really have a favorite movement. But I think the Man Makers are probably the least favorite.


7. Have you had one or two challenging CrossFit goals that you've achieved recently? What are your current goals and how close are you to reaching them?
​ Pull-up WODs. Always struggled with them. It was a great feeling to make it through Murph’s and Ivy’s pull-ups.
Next up Double Unders. I’m starting to get them but still working on the timing.


8. What makes CrossFit different from other fitness programs that you might have tried in the past?
I haven’t done any Fitness program per se. I did take Tae Kwon Do for about 4 or 5 years. It was not as geared toward the functional movements like CrossFit. That being said learning the different fighting techniques and putting them together in different Forms did test your physical strength and mental fitness. Both are definitely enjoyable in their own ways.

9. What impact has CrossFit Benedictus had on your life, in and out of the gym?
​ I have been slow gaining strength in my upper body that I had very little of before joining. Also, just not getting worn out as easily as before. Kirsten might have something to say about this when I come home from a WOD and can’t eat for an hour or two because, as she puts it, I tried to kill myself again. She lets me go back so she must not be too upset. 😊.

10. Tell us about your nutrition and how it has changed, if any, since starting CrossFit?
Sorry, haven’t figured out this yet. (Sweet tooth still has me on this one.)


11. If you could write a WOD for the classes to do, what would it look like?

Capitan Kangaroo: AMRAP 7’
15 Double Unders
10 Box Jump Overs
5 Jumping Jacas

12. What advice do you have for others about the importance of the dedication of taking care of yourself, of investing in yourself?

If you don’t, no one will.


13. What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or who is thinking about giving it a try?

To quote one of the wise elders of the box “Sign Up, Show Up, Shut Up”. It is that simple if you don’t make excuses and come and do as you are told you will improve.
