1.Tell us about yourself, your family, your occupation, hobbies/interests.
I am 39 years old and married to my loving husband Ryan, who also joined CrossFit a few months before me. We have five little rascals 11, 9, 7, 5, and 2. I manage a local restaurant (Habanero). I like cooking, baking, and such things, but I love to garden... when I have the free time. There is a sense of peace that gardens and flowers give.
2. When do you start CrossFitting? Why did you start? Why do you continue now?
I joined CrossFit last spring (May of 2017) mainly to improve my health and fitness which was GREATLY encouraged by my lovely sister who also joined with me! However, since then I have learned more about myself, because each WOD pushes a person out of their comfort zone. It challenges you to go beyond your limits and being able to accomplish it is quite satisfying. This is why I keep coming back and will continue to do so.
3. Do you remember your first WOD? What were your thoughts after your first WOD?
I don’t remember exactly what the WOD was, but I do remember Doc pushing for another rep and Melissa trying to encourage me to keep going as I gasped for air, but then she said “No doc she’s done” and then I collapsed to the floor. I thought “This isn’t for me”, but then I came back and then the DOMS kicked in and I thought “Are they trying to help or to kill me?” But with time it got better and I realized I could do this.
4. What do you enjoy most about CrossFit?
I really like the atmosphere and energy of the Box. The coaches and ladies I work out with are very supportive and encouraging, without them I’m not sure I would be able to continue.
5. What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
Recently I was able to complete the four alley run without breaking it up. It was GREAT!
6. What is your favorite movement or lift? What is your least favorite?
I would say that there are two movements which are my favorite: the KBS Am and the push jerk. My least favorite by far is… the BURPEES! And did I mention my least favorite BURPEES!
7. Have you had one or two challenging CrossFit goals that you've achieved recently? What are your current goals and how close are you to reaching them?
My most recent goal was attending the classes three times a week which I was able to reach this last month. My current goal is to be able to do a push up with the right form and no ab mat. I would say I am probably halfway there.
8. What makes CrossFit different from other fitness programs that you might have tried in the past?
The biggest difference is that CrossFit works, the others don’t. Perhaps this is because there is a group of people you work out with and on top of that the people you work out with make it more enjoyable and the coaches are there to make you more liable for the work out that day. You have someone to answer to. We all know that life happens and things come up but if there is a set time for the work out then it's easier to make it happen.
9. What impact has CrossFit Benedictus had on your life, in and out of the gym?
I think the greatest impact it has, both in the gym and out, is perseverance. It first teaches you patience with yourself and life. Every time you finish a WOD you have grown a little stronger, because you push past something you thought you couldn’t do. It shows you that some things which seem too difficult aren't as bad once you push through it. This is the same with life if you put forth the constant effort in difficulties you will sooner or later see that is not actually impossible.
10. Tell us about your nutrition and how it has changed, if any, since starting CrossFit?
As far as nutrition goes I am more aware of what I am eating and the effects it has... but still it is a working progress.
11. If you could write a WOD for the classes to do, what would it look like?
I would probably do As many reps possible in 20min
10 KBS Am
100 single unders
10 box jumps
12. What advice do you have for others about the importance of the dedication of taking care of yourself, of investing in yourself?
My advice for another about the importance of investing in oneself especially concerning health would be: 'No one wants to be that person who wakes up every day and, literally, has to pop 100 pills a day, and their calendar consist of countless visits to the doctor… If you take the time to care and improve our health now, before it's too late, that would be the best and most rewarding investment that can be done.'
13. What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or who is thinking about giving it a try?
For one who is new to CrossFit or thinking about giving it a try I would advise: “Keep an open mind.Things are not as bad as they may seem when you first start. In the beginning it will feel a bit overwhelming... “I’m never going to get this.” you may think since there is a lot to learn. But after a few months, you'll get into a groove and you'll say “I got this!” A year later …. “Bring it on”.

Firstly and foremost, I want to thank the Man upstairs for giving all of us Doc and Mrs. Carroll, who have done so much, giving both their time and effort to give us the opportunity of even having anything like this in St. Mary's. Thank you, thank you, thank you... To all the coaches, who also dedicate their time to help each and every one of us better oneself, to all the wonderful ladies I have the pleasure of working out with and finally to my husband Ryan, who is always so enthusiastic about my results and progress... Thank you ALL!
