Tell us about yourself, your family, your occupation, hobbies/interests.
Well I am married to my best friend and love of my life Ashley, we have 5 children together, one who is no longer with us. Oliver, Marcel and Juliette, who always keep us on our toes, and Edmund who is about to make his presence any day now. I am the Network Manager for Community HealthCare System and have been with CHCS for 16 years now. My hobbies include:
Cooking, which ironically can also be my downfall because I also love to eat what I cook. I really enjoy hunting when I can and traveling. We love taking random road trips and picking a road and just seeing where it leads.
2. When do you start CrossFitting? Why did you start? Why do you continue now?
I started CrossFit August of 2017 and I started because I was very unhealthy and knew that I needed to make a change not only for myself but for my family. I had done other programs in the past but I could only keep it going for a short amount of time before I would slowly and eventually stop.
I continue because CrossFit has made me healthier and I feel better. I like that fact that every day there is something different and I really enjoy the fellowship and closeness of our group.
3. Do you remember your first WOD? What were your thoughts after your first WOD?
I think my first WOD was rowing for meters, 20 inch box jumps and burpees. My thoughts were “rowing wasn’t bad,” “Wow I really jumped that high” and “I hate burpees!” But in all seriousness I remember finishing and saying to myself this was fun in a weird kind of way, but man I need to lose weight.
4. What do you enjoy most about CrossFit?
CrossFit is always changing and never boring. I also love working out with a group of great guys who always cheer us slower athletes on. Now that I have been in for over a year I really like seeing my old scores being beat sometimes. It is rewarding to compete against myself and of course others.
5. What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
Hmm that is a tough one for me. My first proudest moment was when I could reach the rower handle while my feet were strapped in. The second was when I could jump the 24 inch box jumps. The third would have to be when I did my first wall walk. The fourth was when I could run around the block unbroken during a WOD.
6. What is your favorite movement or lift? What is your least favorite?
Deadlift and Clean and Jerk are my favorites, my least favorite use to be burpees but recently I would have to say Prisoner Walking Lunges. Stairs become my mortal enemy in the two/three days afterwards.
7. Have you had one or two challenging CrossFit goals that you've achieved recently? What are your current goals and how close are you to reaching them?
Recently, so I have been told, my squat has been much better and I am getting down to the proper depth. Also I am getting better at my mechanics on a whole range of movements.
My current goals are really to get back on track with my diet and to eventually be able to do toes to rings and long term goal is to be able to do pull ups. I also want to break the 500 lbs. mark on deadlift before my next year anniversary.
8. What makes CrossFit different from other fitness programs that you might have tried in the past?
Everything about CrossFit is different. I use to just workout on my own and do the same workout over and over. Yes I would get stronger and lose weight but it was boring and I had a very hard time motivating myself to do the work. CrossFit is a social experience and it motivates me to work harder and keep coming back for more.
9. What impact has CrossFit Benedictus had on your life, in and out of the gym?
CrossFit has changed my life in so many ways. My wife would tell you she can’t believe I wake up at 5 am to go work out. I can run around and play with my kiddos without being exhausted in 2 or 3 minutes. I feel better than I ever have and have more confidence in myself.
Before CrossFit I accepted in many ways I was going to be a very heavy person and why even bother anymore trying to lose weight or be healthy. Everything I had tried would work for a little then I would fall back into my old habits again.
Spiritually CrossFit Benedictus is like no other. We start our workout with a prayer and offer our sufferings up, which makes it not only a physical workout but spiritual one as well for me.
10. Tell us about your nutrition and how it has changed, if any, since starting CrossFit
When I first started in August of 2017 I started a very rigorous diet as well. I lost more than 50lbs in 6 months. But after Lent was over I have struggled to keep motivated and have gained around 15lbs back. Not to worry though I have gotten back on the band wagon and I feel very motivated again.
11. If you could write a WOD for the classes to do, what would it look like?
I have always thought team WODs were so much fun and they motivate me more because I don’t want to let my partner down. So if I could write a WOD I would do a fight gone bad relay WOD. So one teammate would start with 5 Deadlifts, move to 5 Box Jumps, then 5 kettle bell swings and finally 5 Wall Balls then next teammate would start. This would be over 5 rounds for time.
12. What advice do you have for others about the importance of the dedication of taking care of yourself, of investing in yourself?
You can always be a better version of yourself. In CrossFit we have a wide array of body types and ages. I know for a fact that everyone of us feels better and can do more because we have taken the steps and dedication to improve our fitness and health. Investing in yourself not only helps you feel better but others around you see the effects as well. In my case my wife and family have seen the impact first hand, I feel better and am able to do more with/for them.
13. What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or who is thinking about giving it a try?
Come and see for yourself what we do. I drove by Doc’s house many times when they were working out and always thought to myself there was no way I could ever do what they do. It wasn’t until I came and saw a WOD that I knew I had no excuse and actually got excited to give it a try.
14. Open Forum:
THANK YOU to Dr. and Mrs. Carroll for opening CrossFit and for all you do for the community. Another big thank you to Coach Pat Hansen who’s persistence to just come check out CrossFit finally got me to show up. To all our awesome coaches for your patience, guidance and encouragement along the way. I owe all of you so much for helping me get my life back. Lastly thank you to my wife Ashley and my children for tolerating me being away from the house more during the week. I know it can be hard especially when I get home from work and have to get changed and leave right away. I love you all and I do this as much for you as I do for me!
God Bless and thank you for this amazing honor.
